Application Process

Portugal Golden Visa Application Process

The process of obtaining a Golden Visa involves navigating various regulatory and procedural steps, each governed by legal mandates under Portuguese law. Below is a comprehensive breakdown of the application process:

Step 1. Investment Execution

Before any formal application, the applicant must make the qualifying investment in full. This includes opening a Portuguese bank account and completing any required financial transactions, such as the transfer of funds for capital investments.

Detailed due diligence on the investment is required to ensure its compliance with legal thresholds and documentation standards set by Portuguese immigration authorities.

Step 2. Application Submission

Submit your application to AIMA. This must include:

  • Proof of the qualifying investment (e.g., title deeds, bank statements, contracts).
  • Valid passport and personal identification documents.
  • Certified criminal background check, issued in the applicant’s country of residence, translated and apostilled as required.
  • Proof of health insurance covering Portugal.
  • Evidence of a legal address in Portugal (rented or owned property).
  • Declaration of compliance with tax obligations and Portuguese social security contributions, where applicable.

The submission includes the required processing fee, the amount of which is determined by AIMA.

Step 3. Application Review and Due Diligence

Once submitted, AIMA undertakes a thorough due diligence process to ensure compliance with Portuguese immigration laws. This process includes background checks on the applicant’s criminal record, financial integrity, and verification of the investment’s legitimacy.

During this period, which typically lasts 6 to 12 months, our legal team remains in constant contact with AIMA, addressing any queries or supplementary documentation requests.

Step 4. Biometrics and Residence Permit Issuance

Upon pre-approval, the applicant is required to travel to Portugal to provide biometric data (fingerprints, photographs, etc.) at a designated AIMA office.
After biometric submission, the initial residence permit is issued, valid for two years. The residence permit can be renewed for subsequent periods of two years, provided the investment remains intact and all residency requirements are fulfilled.

Residency Requirements

Portugal Golden Visa Residency Requirements

These low physical presence requirements do not restrict the applicant’s ability to maintain primary residences or conduct business in other jurisdictions.

However, applicants must comply with tax obligations and maintain their qualifying investment throughout the duration of the residence permit.

The residency requirements are minimal

The Portuguese Golden Visa is designed with flexibility in mind, especially for investors with significant global commitments.

First Year

The applicant is required to stay in Portugal for a minimum of seven days.

Subsequent Years

The applicant must remain in Portugal for a minimum of 14 days.
